CROOKED  FOREST

Date:

Crooked Forest is attracting many tourists from all parts of the world. It is an oddly-shaped forest consisting of about four hundred pine trees. These trees remind us of the letter ‘J’. This forest is located in the village of Nowe Czarnowo near the town of Gryfino, West Pomerania in Poland. It was planted in the 1930s. Each pine tree bends sharply to the north, just above ground level, then curves back upright after a sideways excursion of three to nine feet.

You can never find so many crooked trees growing in clusters anywhere else in the world. What is the reason behind the crooked nature of these trees?

There exist many theories and explanations. A group of people say that the trees became crooked because of gravity. But, scientists reject this theory saying that gravity cannot be the reason for crookedness. Some others opine that trees became bent due to heavy snowfall. They say that when these pine trees sprouted, the snowfall caused them to bend. But, this theory is rebutted by the question why the other trees in this area did not become crooked. A third group of people say that the trees became crooked naturally, while a fourth group says that some form of human tool or technique was used by the farmers to make the trees grow or bend this way. Whatever may be the reason, the crooked forest keeps the tourists mesmerized!
